SUQCESS_1.20 FREEWARE VERSION READ ME
 ============================

This freeware version 1.20 is basically an improved version 1.19 from
2003, which was the last version to work under QDOS.
All known bugs have been removed and some functionality has been added.
        (see SUMMARY of Changes.)
The commercial SUQCESS-2, now at version 2.05, has a lot more options
and makes full use of the extra features SMSQ/E-3 has to offer.

SYSTEM_DEMANDS
 -------------
The SUQCESS window sizes can be set from 512x256 to 1024x768.
Because of memory demands 2Mb or more is recommended, although
SUQCESS-1 will run on a QL with TrumpCard.
Every change to the database is immediately written back to the file,
therefore the use of a hard disk is preferred.

This SUQCESS-1 runs on both SMSQ/E and QDOS and probably Minerva
systems, but needs the help of a few system extensions.
Use the most recent versions of those.

Lots of records and bigger screens need more memory, so it's better
to have 4Mb or more. SUQCESS has been tested extensively with QDOS-JS
        and SMSQ/E, on Aurora+SGC QXL and QPC2, in mode 4, 16 & 32.
(But do check the PROBLEMS chapter.)

CONFIGURATION & INSTALLATION
 ---------------------------
        THE EXTENSIONS
For QDOS you need Toolkit2 and the Extended Environment to be present.
The well known suspects TK2, PTR_gen, WMAN and HOT_rext are already
part of SMSQ/E and need not to be loaded there.

Before you can start SUQCESS, QLIB_run, MENU_rext and DBAS_sys must
also have been loaded in the resident area.
This is best done from your BOOT program:
            - TK2_EXT
            - LRESPR win1_sub_QLIB_run
            - LRESPR win1_sub_MENU_rext
            - LRESPR win1_sub_DBAS_sys
SUQCESS will not start if one of these files it not loaded.

        THE ROOT DIRECTORY
First you must decide on the root where to copy the SUQCESS files.
        Which are: SUQ1xxx_obj & SUQCESS1_inf
                   SUQ1help_idx & SUQ1help_dat
                   HP_690Cx_prt & OKI-MLx_prt

If SUQCESS can't find the _inf file, the program will not start and
        stops with an error message!

        THE TEMPORARY DIRECTORY
Here SUQCESS opens a number of temporary files that will be deleted
after use. Also RAM2 will be used by the printer driver.
NOTE: Only use the supplied printer drivers because only they work with
        this version.

The defaults for these directories are: 'win1_Suq_' and 'Ram1_'.
If your directory settings are invalid, an error message will follow
before SUQCESS will be aborted. Then you must first configure the
working copy of the SUQCESS _obj for valid directories.

        THE COLOURS
The QMENU colours for SUQCESS can be changed but these are only
relevant for mode 4. In high colour modes they conform to the System
Palette you have set as default for MENU_rext.

Use CONFIG or MenuCONFIG to configure SUQCESS for these directories and
colours. More options can be set in Preferences once SUQCESS has been
        started (key F2-A).

NOTE: Under QDOS with WMAN1 you might better use MENU_rext v7.64 from
2002, because in later versions the colours are set to fixed values for
use of the System Palet found in WMAN2. (see also PROBLEMS.)

        THE DATABASE DIRECTORY
Next select a directory for your database files. You can copy the
        example files 'Help_Import_xxx', 'Northwind_xxx' & 'Wein_xxx' there.
You can configure this in Preferences once SUQCESS is started. It will
be kept in the _inf file.

You can also specify a database when starting:
           - EX win1_Suq_Suq120E_obj;"win1_my_database_dbs"

SUMMARY_OF_CHANGES FOR 1.20
 --------------------------

        CSS TO SSF
        ----------
The extension _css changes from now on to _ssf (Search & Style File).
This is done to prevent any confusion with the HTML .css file.
Maybe in the future someone will create a browser program that can
actually use those .css files on a QL.
SUQCESS will first look for an _ssf file and, if not found, for a _css
file. This will be copied to an _ssf file where all changes will be
saved from then on. If neither is found a new one will be created.
If you don't also use an older version of SUQCESS you can then safely
delete the _css files after that.

        MAIN MENU
        ---------
        - The program start is now centred on the screen.
        - The menu code is renewed with an extra size choice (512x480).
        - The last choice is always the maximum screen size, this may differ
from the other choices and be larger then 1024x768.
        - Selecting the current size does not redraw the screen anymore.
        - The main display now has a 'refresh' icon if a redraw is needed.
        - You can change all text to UPPER CASE or lower case in the Edit menu,
this can also be done per character (see F1-Help/Edit).
        - When sub fields are present you can View them before Editing.
In View mode linefeeds are acted upon but in Edit mode they are
replaced by CR (code 13, Shift Enter) characters.
        - In the Edit menu you can also set or unset subfields.
        - The maximum field length for editing is enlarged to 1450 characters.
        - If a field is larger than 1450, you can only View the field.
        - Renaming a Search is now done in its own name window.

        F2/FILE
        -------
        - There is a new test for the maximum number of records that can be
loaded at once, so it doesn't exceed WMAN limitations.
        - Testing for _ssf file corruption is improved when opening a database.
        - 'Save Options' is no longer asked for when printing to a file.
        - When something is changed in 'Preferences' then the database is only
reread when you confirm it by 'OK'.
        - All temporary files are now deleted on quiting the program.

        F3/COMMAND
        ----------
        - Here you can switch off the warning beep.

        F4/FIELD
        --------
        - The Alignment and Column menus now have two sizes, depending on the
          current number of fields.

        F5/DATA
        -------
        - Quiting 'New Record' on the first field can now be done on all types.
        - Deleting all records always leaves one empty record.
        - 'View record' in small menus can be done with or without field names.
        - If a record holds subfields, 'View' will show them, one per line.
        - All items in the Search menu now have their own selection key.
        - Searching on dates or numbers now have their own input windows to
make sure the entry is valid.
        - 'Show Search Criteria' will correctly show dates.
        - The current number of Searches is shown in the Searches menu title.
        - If used with an existing database with more than 99 Searches as in
SuQcess-2, only the first 99 are seen, the rest is ignored.

KNOWN_PROBLEMS
 -------------
        DBAS KEYWORDS
RESET & SMSQ/E: The DBAS file as supplied is version 2.13 (Quanta SP07,
Aug.02) but has been modified. The RESET keyword has been replaced by
DBRST because it conflicted with the RESET command of SMSQ/E.
So it's best to use this new 'mod' version.

If you use DBAS for other programs as well and must use the 'no-mod'
version, that is not a problem. SUQCESS itself will test which version
you have loaded. Beware that the RESET command for SMSQ/E doesn't work
        then any more!

SET: This is the keyword to write to the _dbs. This can be a problem if
you also use the DIYTK SET/ALTER extensions.
Therefore SUQCESS only uses the function FDB_SET.
If you load DBAS before SET/ALTER then SUQCESS will work fine,
load the DIYTK first and SET/ALTER won't!

REMOVE: This is also used by DIY Multi33_code.
SEARCH: This is also used by DP's TK3 and by Array_bin.
FIND : This is also used by iom2_byt.
        SUQCESS-1 uses FDB_REMOVE & FDB_SEARCH, FIND is not used.
The same rules apply as for SET/ALTER.

        DBAS & TK2
The NFS_USE command does not work any more on my systems if I start
DBAS_sys in my BOOT with all the other resident extensions.
There is no problem when I start DBAS after my BOOT, before SUQCESS.
This is true for QL, Aurora and QXL.
Apparently it makes a difference where in the BOOT process I load DBAS.
Normally my NFS_USE settings are done after loading all extensions,
loading DBAS before that prevents this from working properly.

        DBAS & QUBIDE
IMPORT does not always work well. It stops on my Aurora+SGC with an
        error after the field names.
IMPORT works fine on the QXL and under QPC2.
There is also no problem on my QL+SGC, under QDOS or SMSQ/E.
The latest tests suggest it is a Qubide/DBAS conflict because IMPORT
to FLP or RAM instead of WIN is ok on my Aurora!

Also inputing or editing large amounts of data at once could lead to a
corrupted and unreadable _dbs. That's why I regularly close the _dbs
and reopen it before continueing to input data.
This too has only been experienced when using WIN through Qubide.

        _SSF
While testing I inevitably had some program crashes. On some occasions
this led to corruption of the _ssf file, empty lines were inserted.
Hopefully you will not have any program crashes. So before opening a
database the existing _ssf file is checked for this and an error
reported. If you are brave you can edit the _ssf file in a text editor
and remove these empty lines. There may be a messy bit at the start,
these are the printer codes, don't change them. The rest is a simple
text file. You could delete the printer codes completely and reset the
default printer options later. When in doubt it's best to delete the
_ssf and have SUQCESS make a new one automatically. Then you may have
to redo your Searches, Sorting and Column settings.

        LEVEL-2
If you run SUQCESS-1 on a system that doesn't support the level-2
device driver then the directories given in the _inf file are NOT
checked. In that case you must make sure they are revering to a valid
device or SUQCESS may stop with a file error.

        CD-ROM
Opening a dbs directly from a CD may lead to problems because also the
_ssf and _saf files are expected there and SUQCESS must be able to
alter them. It's best to copy such databases to the hard drive or a
        RAM drive first.

        EASYPTR
The problems with some combinations of column widths and window sizes
have been solved by Marcel Kilgus in the latest version 4.
The problems I found when using EP4 with WMAN1 have been solved in the
        program code.

        QDOS & WMAN2
Attempts to test SUQCESS-1 under QDOS and PE v2 failed for a long time
because I could not get a stable PE v2 setup running on any of my
systems. But the latest version 2.05 of Ptr_Gen seems alright.
        I now use: Ptr_Gen v2.05 (20996 bytes, April 2011)
                   Wman v2.05 (18886 bytes, May 2005)
                   Hot_Rext v2.29 (11792 bytes, Jan 2005)
Qpac2 windows still misbehave sometimes but it doesn't crash the QL
anymore and SUQCESS-1 seems to run OK.
Check Dilwyn's site for the latest versions.

Anyone with suggestions or more knowledge about these and other
problems, please contact me by email so it can be corrected in the
        next update.

HOW_IT_WAS_DONE
 --------------
The original SUQCESS was written in 1999 by Wolfgang Uhlig and from
version 1.14 until now mainly updated by me.
The SUQCESS Menus were made with EasyMenu v4.
The SUQCESS Basic was written in QD, using the extensions from EasyPTR,
QMENU & DBAS, then joined and 'Qliberated' through BasicLinker.
The PtrMen code and some DIY commands are embedded in the _obj.

This SUQCESS-1 and an English Trial version of the more advanced
SUQCESS 2.05 can be found at my site:
Of SUQCESS-2 there are full working English, German and Dutch versions.
        Exclusive distribution: Jochen Merz Software.

Especially for Version 2 we are grateful for suggestions from users and
routines and contributions by Simon Goodwin, Dilwyn Jones,
Marcel Kilgus, Jochen Merz, Wolfgang Lenerz and Per Witte.

Great care has been taken to make a stable program but we, the authors
and distributors, will not be responsible for any damage as a result
from using this software on your system. We will try to correct any
        reported errors in future updates.
